project description
Monument of Hope
24 December 2001
installation and performance
Based on the saying, ‘Man does not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.’ 1, this project necessitated the participation of the public who donated Bibles during the exhibition period. Many people congregated around the artist and members of his church stacking the Bibles to find out what was going on. Two Pastors addressed the audience to explain the concept of the artwork, and the good message. Everybody then prayed on their knees, while the artist photographed the Monument, which subsequently disappeared within minutes as people consumed it.
As an artist coming from a Christian perspective, this monument is designed to function as a spiritual pitstop, of sorts, literally a take away monument for members of the public. Joubert Park is situated in an area were there is much crime, poverty and hunger. The intention of the project was to provide a source of sustenance other than bread alone, one that can enrich our hearts and souls.
This was an opportunity for individuals and organisations to share in the building of this monument to hope, an opportunity to show true love to those around us.
