project description

Pile of Bikes 2000

This image documents an installation of bicycles piled on top of one another, intended to function as a memorial, a fleeting monument to those South African’s who did not leave their home, who kept the wheels of day to day existence turning, the unspoken heroes, who lived their lives, in the shadow of apartheid, without allowing it to overshadow them. The metaphor of the bicycle suggests, normality, simplicity, humility and covering distances without fanfare, but nonetheless decisively moving forwards.
