project description

Crossing 2003

Crossing is a collage of found images taken after a collision at crossroads on the outskirts of Pretoria. Situated between a fast-expanding informal settlement on one side and formal, government housing settlement on the other; these crossroads are not regulated by traffic signs or lights.

I came across these fractured chairs scattered arbitrarily on the roadside. The scene reminded me of an archaeological site in that the fractured, dismembered chairs scattered across the landscape recall skeletal remains that provide evidence of human existence. This scenario is even more evocative, given the fact that six people have died here due to the authorities’ failure to safeguard this precarious crossing.
